Game Modes are styles of gameplay in surviv.io. Currently, there are four different types of game modes available; solo, duo, squads, and 50v50. 50v50 is a limited-time mode that used to eliminate duos or squads mode, but now no eliminations when active. Initially, you could only play solo, but duos were added in the v0.2.0 "Two's Company" update on January 17, 2018. Squads were added in the v0.3.0 "Survivrs assemble!" update. 50v50 was added in the v0.7.0 "Incursion recursion" patch as an event with its own separate game mode. Trios are also possible but you will have to make a custom game with 2 other players with auto-fill off and on squads. In the v0.9.2 "Season 2 Has Arrived” update, Event Rotation was introduced and would eliminate one game mode, but in v0.9.8, event rotation never eliminates game mode.
Solo is the core game mode of surviv.io, as well as the first to be available. It is also arguably the most popular game mode of surviv.io due to its ease and complexity. Teaming (partnering with another player) is possible but discouraged as it displays a lack of expertise and may lead to an easy death. The map size is 720x720 or 45 grid tiles.
Duo, commonly referred to as Duos, is the second game mode to be added to surviv.io, added in patch 0.2.0. The game is nearly identical to solo mode except that there are two players per team. Cross-teaming is rare in this mode. It is possible to play with a friend of yours or someone random. The map size is identical to Solo's, which is also 720x720, or 45 grid tiles.
Squad, popularly known as Squads, is the third (and newest) game mode to be added to surviv.io, added in patch v0.3.0 "Survivrs assemble!". Squads are solo in concept, but with a total of four people on a team. It is more difficult to play with random people since the range of expertise spans from professional to rookie. This game mode is great to be with people you know and friends. Frequently Events occur in this game mode, although they have happened in other modes. The map size is slightly larger than Solos or Duos, at 768x768, or 48 grid tiles.
50v50 is currently the only event that has its own game mode. In this mode, there are 2 factions, red and blue (Soviets and PARMA (see Lore)). Each team gets half of the map which is separated by a River. Both teams must find loot to try and defeat the opponent by killing all its members. This mode always takes place on the 50v50 Map. The map size is the largest in the game, at 880x880, or 55 grid tiles.
Every match a random player from each side will be chosen to be the Commander, which is given Super 90 (Red)/AN-94 (Blue) with full ammo, Flare Gun with 1 Flare, an 8x Scope, the highest level Equipment with the Commander Helmet and the Leadership Perk upon promotion.
After the Faction Commander is chosen, the next role for both teams is randomly one of these roles:
- The Lieutenant role which gives the promoted a Level 3 Vest, Military Pack, Lieutenant Helmet, a fully loaded 40-round magazine M4A1-S (Red)/Groza-S (Blue), Trench Spade, 4x Scope, and the Firepower perk that lets them get increased magazines in almost all guns, including the guns that they spawn with.
- The Marksman role which gives the promoted a L86A2 (red) or an SVD-63 (blue). They get a Marksman's Recurve and an 8x scope upon promotion, and also receive the High-Value Targets Perk which allows them to deal more damage to Players with perks. They can even get the Mk 20 SSR, but this is extremely rare.
- The Grenadier role which gives the promoted a MP220, Katana, and the Flak Jacket Perk, along with the hidden Martyrdom Perk. The Equipment for the Grenadier is a Grenadier Helmet, Level 3 Vest and Pack, 4x Scope, and of course, the Flak Jacket that reduces incoming damage which can promote an aggressive playstyle.
- The Recon role which gives the promoted a Dual G18C, Crowbar Carbon, 4x Scope, Small Arms Perk, Recon Helmet, and a Level 3 Vest and Pack. Its perk can be frustrating to play against.
After the role is chosen, one Medic is chosen for each team, which is given highest level equipment with the Medic Helmet, 4x Scope, Mass Medicate and Revivify perks with full Consumables and a Bonesaw Rusted.
Additionally, the Lone Survivr role is for the last two players on either team that are not knocked down and have not disconnected. The Lone Survivr gets either a PKP Pecheneg or a M249, 8x Scope, 8 MIRVs, Splinter Rounds ,and Cast Ironskin Perks guaranteed, they can get either the Windwalk Perk, the Takedown Perk, or the Combat Medic Perk. They also get a Lone Survivr Helmet (depends on faction), a Level 4 Vest, and a Level 3 Pack.
